Whether you've moved from "filer" to "piler" in recent years or have noticed your workspace slowly closing in on you, clutter may prove more damaging in your career than you realize. An excess of "stuff" in the office depletes your energy, hinders productivity, and portrays a negative image to clients and/or supervisors. Now that it is the beginning of the year, what better time to start the year fresh with some of these simple ideas. A clutter cure is readily available and within your reach. Here are 12 places you can start with your clutter.
1. Obvious trash - this might include anything from food wrappers to broken, rotten or moldy items.
2. Outdated or expired materials - travel brochures, advertisements, propaganda, coupons, etc. If you can find it elsewhere, make a note of it in your planner or computer and throw away the item.
3. Unnecessary duplicates - whether multiple copies of the same form or two computers when only one is needed, decide where you have duplication and pare down.
4. Junk mail - prevent it if possible by signing up for the opt-out-programs.
5. Rough drafts or completed projects - when the project is complete and you no longer need the drafts, throw them or recycle them.
6. Useless souvenirs and conference giveaways - Just because it is free doesn't mean you have to keep it!
7. Anything empty, unused or unknown - either fill it, use it, seek out its purpose, or get rid of it.
8. Items you dislike and do not need - we often display items because we think we "should". If you don't need it, you have the right to handle it as you please.
9. Things you do not use on a daily basis - In general, the items on our desktops will only include those things we use on a daily basis - computer, telephone, planner, etc.
10. Anything in excess - rather than 20 pens of questionable functionality stuffed in a canister - just keep 3 or 4 that work. Seek out excess in whatever form and take steps to eliminate it.
11. Materials that evoke negative or unresolved feelings - these items don't need to surround you and it is the new year and you are now starting new. Throw those items which leave you with ill feelings.
12. Items that do not help you pursue your purpose - Get rid of any items not helping you carry out your mission. You never know, they might be just the items to help others live their purposes!
Hope some of these ideas work for you, and take a look at some of the products we offer to help assist with your organizational needs.
